SARS-CoV-2 - Products for Diagnosis - Swabs
The success of the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 (2019-nCoV) during the COVID-19 outbreak depends largely on the quality of the specimen and the conditions under which the specimen is transported and stored before being processed in the laboratory.
The RT-qPCR diagnosis of COVID-19 requires nasopharyngeal swab specimens. This method collects a sample of nasal secretions from the back of the nose and throat. This sample can be tested for the presence of organisms, such as viruses, or other markers of disease.
To take the sample, the swab is inserted into the nostril and gently advanced into the nasopharynx, an area of the pharynx that covers the palate. The swab is then rotated for a specified period of time to collect secretions, then the swab is removed and placed in a sterile viral transport medium, which retains the sample for later analysis, e.g. by RT-qPCR.
The material used for these swabs is very important and cotton swabs should not be used in order to prevent fibres from settling during collection or contamination of the sample. Our swabs are made of flocked nylon to allow optimal sampling.
